Wound healing by a light activated medical glue

Not only in plastic and in aesthetic surgery any scars should be invisible. For this reason surgeons developed several, sometimes high sophisticated suturing methods and glue technology. Current medical glues acted immediately like super glue and were accordingly difficult to handle. Recently, doctors from Boston reported about promising results of a test with a new tissue glue. This glue hardens only after it is activated using a light stream, similarly to the hardening of plastic tooth fillings by dentists. Scientists tested the new method on 31 persons. Such a mode of handling of wound closure is very innovative and improves the quality of the scar clearly.

Conversion from fat to sugar possible

It is widely known that surplus eaten sugar is converted by the body to fat. A conversion from fat to sugar should also be theoretically possible. Until now this changing of direction (from fat to sugar) is not known in the human body and is chemically more difficult. Recently scientists from Jena, Germany found, that the other way round is possible too. They discovered this using biochemical, gen-sequence analytic and bioinformatic methods. This theory must be still experimentally approved in a living cell. When approved this may be an important progress in nutritional science. Then strategies and medicaments may be developed, which degrade fat from the human body.

Artificial skin made with spider silk fibers

Spider silk fibers can be a frame for the cultivation of artificial skin. This documented the group of scientists under leadership of Hanna Wendt. She published results of their work in the renowned online journal PLoS ONE. Silk fibers from the african spider category Nephila were produced with a special technique. These fibers are very strong, stretchable and are well accepted by human body. On this frame two kinds of cells were cultivated, in two overlying layers. The result is very similar to natural human skin. This live artificial skin substitute can be used for treatment of combustion wounds and for treatment of difficult healing wounds.

Since 2000 there is also a fifth flavorknown: the taste which detects glutamic acid, called umami.In nature glutamic acid is found predominantly in meat. The phrase: „Sleep makes beautiful“ is right. Test persons have slept one night through and one night they were awake. Straight after each night they were photographed. These photos were evaluated from independent observers. They found persons who slept in as more attractive and healthier. The study was done from swedish scientists from Stockholm.

Stem cells in Cosmetic Surgery

Fat Stem cells release several growth factors. This was found by Korean scientists from Seoul. Growth factors stimulate the growth of cells. Authors suggest that this can promise an application in cosmetic dermatology, especially in the treatment of skin aging. Stem cells seem to gain an important role in aesthetic medicine in the future.

Fat Stem cells help after heart attack

Human fat from liposuction contains many stem cells. Doctors liposuctioned heart patients and isolated 20 millions stem cells from the fat. They injected these stem cells back through a heart catheter within 10 minutes. Six months later the blood flow in treated hearts was 3,5 fold better and pumping ability was 5,7% better than in patients without this treatment. These results were presented on the American Heart Association Scientific Session 2010. Comments for these effects released Dr. Douglas Losordo from Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago and Dr. Erick Duckers from Erasmus University Rotterdam.

Protection against sun exposure reduces the risk of skin cancer. This is common knowledge of the last decades. Now we learn another side of the matter. Recent findings show that 15 minutes of sun exposure twice a week is enough to protect against of certain kinds of cancer. It seems that vitamin D is a carrier of this effect. Vitamin D is produced mostly in our skin under influence of sun exposure.

Increase of Botox and Hyaluronic acid Treatments in Aesthetic Surgery

Statistics of GÄCD (German Society for Aesthetic Surgery) for the year 2009 show that 71,000 patients were treated with Botox, whereas 19,000 patients were treated with liposuction. Treatment of wrinkles with Botox has increased about 50 percent compared with the previous year. A similar increase of performed injections has been shown in treatment of wrinkles with hyaluronic acid. Data concerns treatments done by members of GÄCD.

From June the 3rd to 5th 2010 was a Convention of Association of German Aesthetic-Plastic Surgeons (VDÄPC) in Aachen. Convention was combined with a Meeting of German Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (DGÄPC) and a Conference of European Association of Societies of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (EASAPS). President of the Convention Professor Norbert Pallua gained very eminent and exciting personalities as speakers. The meeting was devoted to a wide diversity of topics. Nevertheless, the convention was specially dedicated to fat surgery, fat transplantation and stem cells application in aesthetic surgery. The very good, friendly atmosphere and open and easy exchange of know-how and experiences was a strong point of the meeting and pushed it to the top in Germany. Congratulations to Professor Pallua for a very successful congress. We wish to take part in the future meetings of VDÄPC.

German scientists from Postdam-Rehbrücke have found, that probands who have taken 50 gram chocolate per day had reduced their risc for a heart attack and stroke by 40 percent.

Melatonin has Effect on Hair Growth

It is already known, that the hormone Melatonin controls the day and night rhythm of humans. In animal studies it was found a link between the concentration of Melatonin and an increased growth of hairs. With the publication of the following study such an effect was also found at women in 2004.

In December was our scientific article published. It was printed in European Journal of Plastic Surgery. The work reports about our surveys on laser assisted liposuction. We show that selected blood values 24 hours after the surgery are very little lower than before. Moreover, even lower are still within the range of values of normal healthy people.

Tumescent-local anesthesia is a specially for liposuction developed technique to anesthetize. It is mostly used as the sole method to numb the patient during a liposuction. In the case when it is combined with general anesthesia or with intravenous medication complications are possible. The safety of the procedure is however high, when tumescent-localanaesthesia is to be used alone. Professor Loek Habbema evaluated 3240 cases. No significant complications were registered. Brown Fat burns Energy

People have two kinds of fat: white fat and brown fat. Recent investigations show that brown fat burns the energy of white fat. Calculations show that 50 gram of brown fat within one year can burn 5 kilo of white fat. The only problem is, this works best in children only. How to activate brown fat in adults is not known currently. Scientists of Pharmacology in University Bonn hope this will be possible in the future.

Ever was observed that slowly eating people are slimmer than fast eating people. Recently an English/Greek researcher team recognized scientifically that this common sense knowledge is true. Scientists documented that slowly eating people produce more hormones, that are long lasting in the blood which are the signal of saturation (Glucagon-like Peptid 1 and Peptid YY). As a consequence people eat less and are slimmer.

Neodym:YAG Laser for Liposuction

Since more than two years a new laser is introduced to support liposuction. 2006 the neodym:YAG laser was approved by American Food & Drug Administration (FDA) for liposurgery. The pioneers on this field were Goldmann and Kim and Geronemus. Since nearly two years we use Lipo laser in our clinic in Kaiserslautern. Our experiences are very convincing and good. Fat tissue after this treatment is still smoother and easier to remove, and the skin shrinks more quickly and heals easier. This protects against hanging skin after the liposuction even more than in conventional liposuction.

Perfume gives self-confidence

In a study a group of men was sprayed with perfume and antibacterial substances. A control group was sprayed with an identical spray but without the odor and antibacterial substances. The men with perfume were after some days more confident and felt themselves more attractive. Women did previously not make a difference between the groups when they were shown photos of the participants. After the application of perfumes the women had to rate the attractiveness of the men when they were shown on video. The group with the perfumes was rated to be more attractive than the control group.

Lip sticks want to enlarge lips through skin irritations

In the USA and now in Germany there are sold different lip sticks, which promise to enlarge the lips through skin irritations. In doing so the volume of the lips is extended because the substance of content like cayenne pepper and cinnamon extends the veins. But it also burns on the skin. We do not recommend the usage of such products, because the primary function of the lips sticks bases on a sickness, namely the irritative contact dermatitis. A child was sent to a dermatologist, because it received a kiss from its mother. The resulting skin irritations were enhanced because of the age of the patient.

Fat form liposuction contains stem cells

Scientists from Brazil found out, that fat originating from a liposuction also has stem cells inside. According to the study stem cells can be found 5 times more often at the lower belly than the upper abdomen (belly). They analysed the fat after 25 liposuctions of different patients. Also the fat from the inner flank is rich of adult stem cells.

Laser Welding instead of stitching a wound

At the end of every surgical operation the surgeon makes stitches to close the wound borders. Since 30 years it is also possible to use tissue-glue for this purpose. Now, American scientists test a new procedure: welding with laser instead of stitches. Perhaps in 5-10 years surgical wound borders can be fixed on this way. Actually, this procedure is still not approved by Food and Drug Administration FDA.

Drinking water helps to prevent overweight

Children have more seldom overweight, when on their school there is a water dispenser and teacher remind of this fact regularly. That showed a study of the Research Institute of Child Nutrition Dortmund (FKE) with 3000 children on 32 elementary schools. Apart from the central water dispenser, the children received a bottle of water. At the end of the study such a child drank 1 glass of water at the average than the control group of children. In the control group the portion of overweight children increased, while it stayed constant at the water drinking group. Practical conclusion: Everybody who drinks water more often, is less endangered of overweight.

Meals which are rich on fat lead to a release of messengers of inflamation into the fat tissue especially around the vessels. This can be probably a mechanism of arteriosclerosis. This happens independent of fat values in blood. The authors conclude that fatty meals are unhealthy.

Women have more fear of wrinkles than of cancer

Young female students received a brochure about the risks and alternatives of a solarium.

While 200 students could read that the visits of a tanning booth leads to an increased rate of wrinkles, the other 200 students only received the information that frequent visits of a tanning booth leads to a higher risk of skin cancer.

After half a year in the group with the wrinkles brochure 37,6 % did not go anymore to tanning studios. The other group with skin cancer information did not change their habits at all.

It seems that women have more fear of wrinkles than of skin cancer.

Scientists from Berlin developed a so called cold fire. This should be good for wound healing processes. Cold fire comes from burning a mix of oxygen and nitrogen which produces a plasma in some cm away from the flame, this is a gas which contains electric ions. Until now breast augmentation was only with an implant possible. Therefore women who do not accept the surgical treatment were not able to enjoy an improved feminine feeling. Recent progress makes it possible to perform breast augmentation with the syringe. The new form of gel of hyaluron acid is to be injected in the breast to enlarge it. Unfortunately, "Pamela-volume" cannot be reached through this. However patients have not the usual operation-stress and the recovery time is definitely shorter.

Any patients which desire eyelid correction, especially in spring have symptoms of atopic dermatitis or hypersensitivity to pollen. They are as follows: light burning feeling in eyes, red eyewhite, folds around the eyes, double lower-lid. Since several years any medical groups try to enlarge breast with fat transfer of the patients own fat. These trials were until now not successful, because small vessels in transplant were missing and could not support the cells with blood, and new vessels were not produced quickly enough. This is why traditional transplants degraded rapidly. In September 2007 Japanese doctors reported online about successfull breast augmentations at 40 patients. They found methods how to avoid the transplantat degradation. This is why the chance for natural breast enlargement without silicon implants in the future grows rapidly. It is known that american doctors are also very far in this area.

On the 21st -22nd September 2007 the experts for plastic-aesthetic surgery & reconstructive oncological gynecology met together regarding the 50th Clinic Anniversary.
On two days, live surgeries were transferred on screen to the assembly hall.

Our interest was focused on speech of Professor Bruant-Rodier from Strassbourg about lipotransfer for correction and/or augmentation of the breast.
This refreshing exchange of experiences, warm harmonic atmosphere and good wether were due to the well organised assembly.

Scientists discovered New Way how Hyaluronic Acid works

Wrinkle treatment with hyaluronic acid injections is one of the most successful procedures in cosmetic dermatology. The improvement of the skin pattern was generally believed to be due to filling the wrinkles with new material. Now scientists have found and proven that it is partially also a result of the production of completely new collagen after hyaluronic acid injection. Recent research confirms that treatment with hyaluronic acid enhances the collagen ratio in the skin. Scientists Frank Wang et al. (Arch Dermatol 2007; 143 (2) 155-63) found also that hyaluronic acid-treated skin has a higher level of the enzyme responsible for collagen synthesis. That is great news for patients. It means that hyaluronic acid injection lasts longer than comparable treatments.

New Development in Cellulite

Cellulite, develops imperceptibly and without spectacular events. Women affected by cellulitis often accept this skin health aberration in silent as fate. Finally this fault was well-known within living memory. A study of the Dept. of Dermatology University of Munich (Pavicic et al. JDDG 4; 2006; ) found, that one of the most effective methods for cellulitis reduction is a liposuktion. It is a side effect of the operation here. The most frequent reason for a liposuction are fat distribution disturbances. Authors of the study assumpt that a decreased pressure of subskin tissue cause an improvement in skin pattern. Also the post-operative healing processes in deeper fat layers of the hypodermis is responsible for a rise in a skin tension.
